Yesterday was a heart breaking day for me. I share this not to hurt the hearts of others; but to spread a message.
Yesterday a good samaritan surrendered a stray rabbit to me at the animal hospital. Someone failed this rabbit. They released him outside or allowed him to live outside and he escaped; whatever the case was, their lack of regard for his welfare cost him his life. This tiny, 3 pound rabbit was hit by a car. He had severe damage to his skull, eye and chest. Because of the severity of his injuries, he was humanely euthanized. This was an unfair ending for what appeared to be a young rabbit. It was an unfair ending for myself and coworkers who cried as we held him and gave him peace. Your life will change, your living situation may change. Your children may lose interest. Your bunny will hit puberty and become hormonal. They may start chewing on your furniture, or peeing on your carpet. No matter what your reason is, it is never good enough to just put them outside to fend for themselves. A pet is a life long commitment. They deserve more than to be discarded liked trash.
Please help me spread the message in honor of this beautiful boy. Do not let his death be in vain. Inform people that rabbits aren’t starter pets. They aren’t easy to care for. They’re not for children. They can not be released outside when they are no longer wanted. Please consider all of the responsibility involved when you bring a rabbit into your home, and always adopt.
