Calverton Abandonment

We are horrified by the situation in Calverton today.

Several dozen domestic rabbits were dumped on three different roadsides. The majority of the rabbits dumped were already deceased.

Many have tattoos in their ears, which indicates these rabbits came from a breeder or a farm.

We were made aware of the situation by the Suffolk County SPCA after other rescue group(s) and individuals saved the living rabbits and cared for the bodies of the deceased. We are incredibly grateful that people are stepping up on behalf of these rabbits. As soon as we know who these group(s) and individuals are, we will share links to support them with donations and supplies.

We are reaching out to you tonight, because someone knows something.

Even if this crime was perpetrated by one individual, it is likely that someone out there knows someone who had dozens of rabbits yesterday and doesn’t have them anymore. Please, on behalf of these dozens of innocent lives, report any information to the SPCA.

We will update you when more information is available. Again, we are incredibly grateful to those who stepped up to help in this horrific situation. News 12 Long IslandNewsdayNYS Department of Agriculture and Markets
