Pearl was found abandoned in Nassau County in August 2021. A sassy babe with a heart of gold, little miss Pearl is exceptionally neat–which, let’s be honest, is a rare quality in pets of any kind–and is very sweet.
In early March, a volunteer picked up our sweet foster girl Pearl for a “speed date” adoption and felt a large hard mass dead center on Pearl’s bottom jaw.
She was seen by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian and found that the lump was caused by two large abscesses. A skull X-ray showed us that Pearl has severe tooth root issues, meaning they are all likely to form more abscesses. The doctor was able to remove the pus from the current abscess and started her on oral antibiotics, but this won’t fix the problem long term.
Last week, Pearl had surgery to remove the two abscesses. One molar root is connected to the abscess hole, so it could cause another abscess to come back quickly.. Eventually the doctor would like to remove the problem molar when it loosens.
Pearl is back at her sanctuary foster home. She wasted no time returning to her usual shenanigans and is in great spirits. Her aftercare includes inserting healing cream into both of the “caves” where the abscesses were to aid healing until the holes close up. Going forward we will monitor for more abscess growth and she will potentially need more surgeries for molar extraction.
Pearl has accrued over $1,300 in medical bills, with more to come. This Easter, we are appealing to you, our dear supporters, to help us pay off Pearl’s surgery bills. Any additional funds we raise will go toward the future rescues, those “Easter bunnies” soon tossed away and forgotten like Pearl once was.
